| 2007 Shizuoka Open Symposium Staged by Sunstar Foundation for Oral Health Promotion |

From 1:00 in the afternoon on June 12 (Wed.), 2007, the Sunstar Shizuoka Open Symposium was staged at the Shizuoka Convention & Arts Center.
The theme was "The Peculiar Relationship between the Body and Mouth : Oral Care for a Healthy Body". It had been planned as an opportunity to provide medical professionals and general consumers with information on "how one's overall health is related to one's oral health and the affects that oral health have on one's physical well-being."
The first half of the two-session symposium was presided over by Dr. Osamu Iijima, Chairman of the Shizuoka Prefecture Dental Association. It opened with a keynote address on "Effective Communications for Diabetes Patients" by Dr. Alan Jacobson, Senior Vice President of the Joslin Diabetes Center, a forerunner institution in diabetes treatment and patient education research, and followed with a special lecture on "Food, Life and Feelings" by Dr. Ken Yamaguchi, Director of the Shizuoka Cancer Center.
Dr. Jacobson also gave a presentation on the mental healthcare for diabetes patients and the patient education program launched last year with the world's largest drug store chain, Walgreen. Thereafter, Dr. Yamaguchi spoke about the patient-oriented team care provided by the Shizuoka Cancer Center, which has a proud record of high patient satisfaction, and noted in particular the proper removal of plaque, professional care and an improved lifestyle as countermeasures to oral weaknesses associated with cancer treatment. He stressed the importance of knowing, prevention, checkups and awareness activities promotion and introduced the three-piece oral care set of prevention, early detection and treatment provided only in Shizuoka through joint research with Sunstar.
In the second session, three presentations were given with Dr. Yamaguchi serving as the moderator. First, Dr. Tatsuhide Inoue, Head of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center at Shizuoka General Hospital, talked about "Diabetes and Oral Care" , and was followed by Dr. Katsumi Naito, Head of the Oral Surgery Department at the Hamamatsu Medical Center, who lectured about "Lung Disease Prevention and Oral Care". Next came Dr. Yojiro Ota, Head of the Oral Surgery Department at the Shizuoka Cancer Center Hospital, spoke about "Cooperation between dental practice for cancer patients beginning with Shizuoka Cancer Center Hospital".
The symposium was attended by some 450 persons amongst which were physicians, dentists, pharmacists, healthcare specialists, nurses, dieticians and dental hygienists, as well as representatives from government and medical associations, journalists, 8020 promoters, and people from the general public. They listened attentively to talks about "The Peculiar Relationship between the Body and Mouth: Oral Care for a Healthy Body." |
