Support for HIV/AIDS Activities
At the International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific(July 2005)
HIV/AIDS constitute the most serious health problem in the world with over 40 million people infected worldwide. Sunstar showed its support for HIV/AIDS activities with a booth and volunteers from our employees at the 7th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) in 2005, in which brought together persons from government, international organizations, medical fields and scholars from around the world. At the booth, a "Big Red Ribbon Statue" was created in cooperation with congress participants. Smaller ribbons were prepared by employees beforehand, and under the theme of "one's small efforts can add up into big movement together", participants from all over the world took part in the activity.
Sunstar also supported AIDS awareness event held by an NGO on the World AIDS Day (December 1st).

Support for HIV-AIDS Activities
AIDS Awareness Street Campaign for Young People (April 2006)
Sunstar put on an HIV/AIDS awareness street campaign for young people on the weekend of April 22 and 23 in Shibuya, Tokyo. The campaign, held in front of a famous comedy TV studio, Yoshimoto Mugendai Hall, attracted many young people, together with the promotional event of "Rent", a film that addresses the AIDS issue faced by young people today. The main activity of the campaign was the "Big Red Ribbon Statue". People were asked to stick one tiny red ribbons into a big white ribbon, as a call for understanding and compassion for HIV/AIDS issues. Popular young comedians from the Yoshimoto Troupe, "Kodakara" and "Kyabestu Kakuninchu" helped bring people in to make the big red ribbon. Over the two days, about 4,000 ribbons were arranged together into the statue. The contribution of ¥30,859 by the event was donated to the JaNP+, a network of HIV positive people. Sunstar would like to thank everyone who joined the campaign.

Sponsorship of “A Better Body Starts with Oral Care”: Focus on the Relationship between Periodontal Disease, Diabetes and Other Ailments
The Sunstar Foundation for Oral Health Promotion staged a completely new style and format of event in “A Better Body Starts with Oral Care” on February 2 and April 2, 2006, with the aim of improving health, lifestyles and cultures through oral care. It featured a mixed program of lectures, a public symposium, a concert, and a talk-show-and-dinner.

The lectures took “Diabetes and Oral Health” as a theme and heard presentations in the areas of specialty by Dr. Yutaka Seino, Administrator of Kansai Electric Hospital and Professor Emeritus of Kyoto University, Dr. George King, Harvard Medical School Professor and Director of Research at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Dr. Atsunori Kashiwagi, Lecturer at the Shiga University of Medical Science, Dr. Sebastion Ciancio, Professor and Chair of Periodontics at State University of New York at Buffalo, and Dr. Yoji Murayama, Professor Emeritus of Okayama University.

The public symposium was staged under the theme of “The Odd Relationship between Your Mouth and Body”. It introduced in an easy-to-understand fashion the relationship between the physical condition of the entire body and oral health, and the effects that oral health can have on one’s overall physical health. The symposium invited Paul Peterson, Chief of the WHO Oral Health Division, Dr. King, Dr. Jill Rethman, Member of the Committee on Dental Hygiene Education of the American Academy of Periodontology, and Eiji Inoshita, Director of Health and Welfare Promotion at the Shiga Prefecture Health and Welfare Center in Otsu. Dr. Murayama served as the moderator.

Sponsorship of “Bright White Teeth Family Musical”
In order to promote the 8020 Movement (“8020” means to have 20 teeth at age 80) advocated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Japan Dental Association, Sunstar has every year since 1992 tied up with local dental associations to stage the “Bright White Teeth Family Musical” all across Japan.
The objective is for young mothers and their children to understand the importance of oral care and regular brushing. It features a fun program with young girls dressed as Miffy and rabbits singing and dancing, a puppet show and more, as well as instructions on proper brushing by dental hygienists. Free dental consultation was also provided in the hall. This family musical has been highly rated from the perspective of hygiene education. The show has been watched by already 180,000 children and their parents.

Oral Cleaning Instruction for Autistic Children
With the cooperation of the Takatsuki School Board, dental associations, elementary schools, the Hokusetsu Suginokokai, the Osaka Autism Support Center and the Osaka University Graduate School of Dentistry, the Sunstar Foundation for Oral Health Promotion applied money from the oral care support activities of the 8020 Promotion Foundation that have been conducted since 2003 to teaching autistic children how to brush their teeth. The project combines the knowledge, skills and experiences of childcare and special needs teachers, autistic support assistants, dentists and dental hygienists with the objective of improving the oral health of handicapped children. Behind this initiative lies the thinking that schools must understand the educational needs of each and every special needs child whether afflicted with LD, ADHD or autism, and provide them with proper education assistance.
The Sunstar Foundation for Oral Health Promotion is promoting the project as a model in limited areas.
