Inquisitiveness? Curiosity? Obsession? / Naoko
I suppose I enjoy getting hooked on something. Anyone can easily tell when I’m into something.

When I was mad about an actor from the Shiki Theatre Company, I went to Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo just to watch him perform. I went to the movie theatre countless times to watch the movies Chicago and Moulin Rouge. I bought almost every DVD that the Hong Kong actor, Tony Leung, appeared in, from the major films released in Japan to the lesser-known films in Cantonese, English and with Mandarin subtitles. I even bought magazines and photo collections that were written in Cantonese and Mandarin. My daughter has given up on me. She told me: “You’re going to regret it. A month later those will go in the storage room.” (Actually, they haven’t been relegated to the storage room, but hmm…I wonder where they went?)

Even when it comes to food, I’m the type to eat foods I like until I get sick of them. Until just recently I was crazy about Kobeya’s “Danish Melon,” a kind of melon-flavored bread. When it went on sale, every day for about a month I ate it for breakfast. These days I travel to Bangkok often, and when I am free to eat what I like, I always eat "Phad Kraphaw Kai Khai Daow", a certain fried dish made with red pepper, green vegetables and chicken that’s served over white rice and topped off with a fried egg. It’s really delicious! By the way, I’m really into yogurt now. I eat and compare different brands…two a day.

At work, too, when something captures my interest, even if it’s not directly related to me, I get the urge to thoroughly research it, and because I’m lucky to be surrounded by a lot of people who are kind enough to explain things to me, I’ve become quite knowledgeable about trivial things.

When I become obsessed with something, although I become completely engrossed in it for a while, I also tire of it quickly. At work this is a real advantage, but otherwise I usually end up exasperated with myself wondering, “Why did I get so wrapped up in that?” If I don’t, though, then I’m not satisfied so I suppose it can’t be helped. Anyway, it’s fun finding that something that makes me think, “This is it!” My friend says, “Your love also heats up fast but cools just as quickly.” I guess that’s true…
