Q2:What is the cause of periodontal disease?

A2:
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that can be transferred from person to person through personal contact. If a mother suffers from periodontal disease or if she has periodontal bacteria, her child will be infected with the periodontal bacteria by the time the eating habit is established. However, in most cases, gingivitis is not developed until the child grows up to an adult, because "genetic factors" and "environmental factors," such as smoking habit, advancing age and stress relate to the development of the disease.

Periodontal disease develops with bad living habits and settlement of infected bacteria took place over a prolonged period. The disease may be first transmitted between husband and wife or parents and children through saliva. For certain bacteria, pet animals may also be identified as a possible source.
Genetic factors for periodontal disease is not something that displays clear abnormal symptoms as seen in general genetic diseases. It implies an individual predisposition whether the person has a tendency to develop gingivitis. There are countless numbers of genetic factors an individual has.

Among the environmental factors, smoking habit is considered the most harmful. Recent study clearly reveals that nicotine, tar, carbon dioxide, and etc. affect functions of periodontal tissues and give rise to periodontitis. Furthermore, aging decreases metabolism of periodontal tissue cells and the body's defensive mechanism against infection. Stress also lower the body's immune system and affects the development and advancement of periodontal disease.
