Q1:What is periodontal disease?

A1:
Periodontal disease is a lesion that arise in any periodontal tissue -including gingiva, alveolar bone, cementum, and periodontal ligament-- a structure surrounding and supporting the tooth. Periodontal disease, in general, refers to "chronic marginal periodontitis" which can eventually lead to loss of teeth.
[Early stage of periodontal disease]

Periodontal disease is mainly caused by bacterial infection. It begins with the symptoms of gingivitis, presented by clinical symptoms of red, swollen or bleeding gums. If the borders between teeth and gingiva (gingival sulcus) is left unclean, they become inflamed from miscellaneous bacteria stagnation. This inflammation is a sign of defense reaction of the body's immune system counteracting the bacteria and protecting the periodontal tissues from it. with poor oral hygiene, the functions of epithelial cells attached to tooth surfaces and periodontal ligament cells are affected by immune products for defense, resulting in the deepening of gingival sulcus. This sulcus formed is designated periodontal pocket.
[Established stage of periodontal disease]

Once formed, periodontal pocket starts to act as a breeding ground for periodontal bacteria to proliferate. The immune response intensifies in the deeper part, in reaction to the periodontal bacteria invading a course into root apex from gingival margin can ultimately lead to the destruction of the supportive structure that holds your teeth in place. As a consequence, the severely progressed periodontal disease, thus, can result in the loss of teeth along with significant destruction of the periodontal tissues.
[Advanced stage of periodontal disease]

Periodontal disease, as above, can be refereed to as a disease that destroys the "periodontal structure."
